SEOUL · WHERE TO STAY
Where should you stay in Seoul?
There is no single “best neighborhood.” The right base is the one that reduces repeated cross-city travel for the itinerary you actually plan to do.
30-SECOND DECISION
Start with these five areas
| Area | Best starting point for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong | Balanced first trips, central sightseeing, shopping | Busy and commercial; not the strongest choice for nightlife-focused trips |
| Hongdae | Nightlife, cafés, younger travelers, western Seoul | Less convenient when most days are centered on palaces or southeast Seoul |
| Jongno / Gwanghwamun | Palaces, Bukchon, Insadong, history and walkable central days | Quieter late-night atmosphere than Hongdae |
| Gangnam | Southern Seoul, business, shopping, events | Longer trips to many historic sights north of the river |
| Jamsil | Families, Lotte World area, southeast Seoul | Not a central base for palace-heavy itineraries |
Myeongdong: the safest default for a balanced first trip
Myeongdong works well when you want a central base and your days are spread across several parts of Seoul. It is especially practical for travelers who value straightforward shopping, food access and short hops to major central districts.
Choose it because your itinerary is central — not because every first-time visitor “must” stay there.
Hongdae: better when evenings matter
Hongdae is a stronger starting point when cafés, nightlife, live culture and a younger atmosphere are part of the trip rather than an occasional side stop. It can also make sense when your airport rail route and western-Seoul plans line up well.
Jongno / Gwanghwamun: best for historic Seoul
If palaces, Bukchon, Insadong, museums and traditional neighborhoods are the center of the itinerary, staying close to them can remove a surprising amount of daily transit. This is often more valuable than picking a hotel with a better-looking price farther away.
Gangnam: choose it for a south-of-the-river trip
Gangnam makes sense when your schedule is already weighted toward southern Seoul — business, shopping, dining, clinics, events or neighborhoods on that side of the river. It is a weaker default if most of your saved places are in historic central Seoul.
Jamsil: useful for family-focused itineraries
Jamsil can be a practical family base when attractions in southeast Seoul anchor one or more days. If the trip is mostly palaces, traditional neighborhoods and central shopping, it may create more cross-city travel than necessary.
